What I Did on the Open Road to Get Home
I left before dawn with my body ready and one thought in mind: reaching the other side of the highway after giving myself to every driver willing to stop.

The package arrived on a Tuesday. I held it in my hands without opening it for ten minutes, knowing that once I did, there’d be no turning back.
We posted the ad out of curiosity. Two weeks later, a young guy was in our living room, trembling, about to put on a black lace dress.
That afternoon everything seemed normal, just a get-together with friends. Until she opened my bedroom door and looked me over without asking permission.
The message said: “How about sharing you with a couple?” I laughed. But something in those words sparked a curiosity I didn’t know I had.
I was seventeen, and the heat wouldn’t let me sleep. I went into his room looking for water and found something I’d never forget.
I went into the confessional with shame and came out knowing that what my son felt for me was not so different from what I was beginning to feel for him.
His hand was where it shouldn’t have been, and my voice was whispering things no son should hear. But neither of us wanted to stop.
When he hugged me from behind and I felt his body against mine, we both knew it had a name no one dared to say aloud.
I hadn’t planned it. But when he walked in with the others and locked eyes with me, I already knew that night would end only one way.
Five thirty. The dark hallway. I went to wake her, and what I heard behind that door left me breathless for fifteen minutes.
We left the café saying we were going out for some air, but when he took my hand and led me among the trees, I already knew how the night would end.
I got naked in my in-laws’ pool at two in the morning. Ten minutes of silence and freedom. Then I heard a door open.
She arrived with a backpack on her shoulder and a red pacifier between her lips. She had just turned twenty-two and laughed as if she already knew everything that would happen next.
Half-drunk beside the stream, I searched my pocket for the wipes and pulled out something that shouldn’t have been there. Bad decisions are always the ones you remember best.
When he closed the door with his suitcase, we were left alone. The sex was still there, intense and familiar, but something was missing. Something only he brought.
There were eight of us executives on a sailboat in the sun. The tension had been building in the office for months. When we anchored in that deserted cove in Menorca, there was no turning back.
I’d go down in the middle of the night to the mattress on the floor where he slept, pull the sheets over us, and stay there until he finished. We were almost never caught.
We’d been locked up for days when the conversation turned dangerous. His confession in the dark ended with my hands on him.
We’d been talking for three weeks on the phone. When I finally opened the door, I knew that night wouldn’t end with a simple kiss.
