The Night I Discovered What My Body Had Been Hiding From Me

I was thirty-two when I finally let myself listen in silence. And I say “finally” because until that night I had lived by smothering one question with noise: the radio in the car, podcasts in the shower, series on a loop until I fell asleep. Anything at all, as long as I didn’t have to be alone with what I was thinking.

I was married to a good man. I don’t want to be unfair to Tomás. He was affectionate, steady, predictable in the kindest sense of the word. We had been together seven years and married four, and I had never given him cause to doubt me. Nor had he given me any. And yet there was a part of me he didn’t know. A part I didn’t even dare to explore myself.

That night he had gone north for work. Three days, he said. Four, with the trip back. The house was mine, the silence was mine, and for the first time in years I had no excuse to keep dodging myself.

I poured myself a glass of red wine and left it on the nightstand untouched. I turned off my phone. I pulled down the blind. The room fell into a soft, orange half-light, almost like late afternoon in winter, even though it was eleven at night and outside a heavy rain was pounding the windows as if it were in a hurry.

I sat on the edge of the bed and breathed.

Tonight I’m not going to lie to myself.

That was the only thing I said to myself. It wasn’t some elaborate plan or solemn promise. It was almost surrender. A weariness accumulated over years of pretending that what was happening to me wasn’t happening.

***

I started with my breathing, because I had read somewhere that breath was the bridge. I inhaled through my nose to a count of four, held for two, exhaled for six through my mouth. After a few minutes I felt my shoulders loosen, my jaw unclench, a place in my chest that had been tight for months begin to open.

I touched my arms first. With no purpose at all. I ran my fingertips along the inside of my forearm, the curve of my elbow, my wrist. My skin reacted in a way that surprised me, as if I were rediscovering a terrain I knew by heart but had never really looked at.

I moved up my neck, slowly. Behind my ear, in that tiny hollow where the short hairs stood on end. And then, without warning, the first image came.

***

Carolina.

The new designer at the studio. I met her in February, at the welcome party. She had reddish brown hair and a deep laugh that seemed to rise straight out of her stomach. She wore old ankle boots and a thick wool sweater that hung on her too large. We talked for twenty minutes by the window about a book we had both read that summer. When she laughed at something I said, she put her hand on my forearm and left it there two seconds longer than necessary.

I laughed too. I changed the subject. I took a long drink of wine. And when I got home that night, I spent half an hour under the shower trying not to think about the way her collarbone had gleamed under the kitchen light.

For months I pretended nothing had happened. We crossed paths in the hall, talked about projects, she invited me to lunch and I always found an excuse. The excuse was fear, but fear was never called by its name. It was called “I’m swamped,” “I brought lunch,” “I’ve got a call.”

That night, alone in bed, I let Carolina in. No filters. I imagined her leaning against the frame of my bedroom door, with that half smile she wore when she liked someone. I imagined her approaching slowly, sitting on the edge of the mattress, brushing the back of her hand along my cheek. I imagined her leaning in and grazing my mouth with hers.

My stomach tightened. But not with guilt. With desire.

***

Then I realized something I had been denying for years. It wasn’t curiosity. It wasn’t a phase. It wasn’t the alcohol at that party. It was desire, pure and simple, directed at a specific woman with a specific collarbone and a specific way of looking at me.

I lowered my hands. I touched my breasts over my T-shirt, slowly, as if she were the one doing it. The shirt bothered me and I took it off. My skin was bare. My skin answered.

But then, almost without meaning to, the image changed.

***

It wasn’t Carolina anymore. It was Marcos, a university classmate I’d lost touch with more than a decade earlier. I wasn’t in love with Marcos back then. He was just a friend, one of those friends you study with until four in the morning before an exam and then collapse asleep on your sofa. But I remembered one specific dawn in his apartment, when he was barefoot and wearing an old sweatshirt while he made coffee. I looked at him from the sofa and thought, without allowing myself to say it, that he had beautiful hands. Long hands, strong hands, with prominent bones.

I had spent my life telling myself that dawn had meant nothing. And there it was, twelve years later, returning to me in my whole body.

I imagined those hands on my belly. One of them sliding up my side, settling beneath my ribs. The other moving down the inside of my thigh, slowly, unhurriedly, as though it had all the time in the world. I imagined the weight of his body over mine and the way his unshaven beard would scrape my neck.

Desire hit me differently then. With Carolina it had been a soft inward pull, an attraction drawing me in. With Marcos it was weight, pressure, something pushing.

Both things were real.

Both things were mine.

***

I had spent so many years choosing sides that I didn’t know how to live without choosing. In adolescence I fell in love with a boy, and then I decided: I’m heterosexual, case closed. At twenty-two, a roommate kissed me in the kitchen after a party and told me the next day it had been a mistake. I told her yes, of course, I’d had too much to drink, and erased her from the problem. At twenty-six I met Tomás and the question closed completely, with a lock and everything.

But questions don’t close because you get married. They close when you answer them.

That night I understood that my desire was not a scale with two pans that had to be weighted toward one side or the other. It was a river. It changed course, depth, temperature. Sometimes it came in the shape of a woman, sometimes in the shape of a man, sometimes in a mixture that didn’t need a label. And all those shapes were water from the same river.

***

I returned to Carolina. This time it wasn’t a kiss. It was her kissing my neck while Marcos—in some impossible corner of my mind, with no logic at all—held my wrists above my head. The scene made no sense in the real world, and I didn’t care. Fantasy didn’t have to answer to logic. Fantasy existed to show me something reality had been masking.

I touched myself between the legs with one hand, while the other moved up and down my side. I wanted to feel tenderness and firmness at the same time. My skin answered to both. When the fingers were soft, slow, barely brushing, my body drew inward and softened. When the pressure was firmer, more direct, my body arched up as if asking for more.

I had spent years masturbating quickly and in the dark, almost as a chore. Getting the tension out and falling asleep. That night was different. That night there was no hurry, no guilt, no prepackaged scenes borrowed from some video that might have made me blush. That night it was me and my two rivers.

I let my hand linger longer, let my thumb draw slow circles, let my body guide me instead of obeying. The heat kept building in a filthy, dense way, like a fire that made no sound. I closed my eyes and saw Carolina standing between my legs, her hair falling over one side of her face, looking at me as if she knew exactly what she was doing to me. I saw her lower her head and kiss my belly, then my groin, then the wet fold where everything in me was already trembling.

And I saw Marcos behind her, a firm, large presence, his hands on my waist, pressing me into the mattress while I opened my legs wider without any shame. In the fantasy, he didn’t hesitate. He knelt. He grabbed my hips and drove his tongue into the place where I was already soaked, licking hungrily, making me moan out loud for the first time. I pulled Carolina’s hair while she kissed my nipples, biting softly at first, then harder, until the pain turned sweet.

The mixture was obscene and perfect. One mouth between my thighs. Another on my chest. A man’s hand holding me so I wouldn’t get away. A woman’s hand caressing my face with a tenderness almost cruel. I imagined myself saying “don’t stop” and “harder” in a broken voice, not deciding which of them I was saying it to. I imagined their two laughs mingling, hers deep and his low, responding to my body as if it were an instrument they knew how to play.

Then I came apart a little. Then more. My body started throbbing inside, and it wasn’t just my hand anymore: it was the pressure of an imaginary mouth, the scrape of nails on my back, shame falling to pieces and landing on the floor like old clothes. I brought two fingers to my clit and moved them with purpose, fast at first, then with tiny pauses that made me exhale between my teeth. Moisture ran across my palm. The sound was filthy, explicit, real, and I did nothing to hide it.

I wanted them to look at me. I wanted them to see all of me. I wanted to open wider, legs parted, chest bare, head thrown back, while one tongue licked me and another hand slipped fingers inside me, one, then two, then three, until it touched that deep place I had always ignored by moving too fast. I felt my body tense around that idea, as if imagination itself were pushing from inside the flesh.

I didn’t think about being good. I thought about being taken.

I didn’t think about choosing. I thought about surrendering.

I didn’t think about names. I thought about mouths, fingers, saliva, the exact pressure of hips against mine, the delicious weight of someone holding me without permission to let go yet.

The first orgasm surprised me because I wasn’t chasing it. It came on its own while I imagined Carolina burying her face between my thighs with a desperation almost insolent and Marcos pushing his tongue into my mouth at the same time, as if he could erase me and rebuild me in one motion. The blow went through me completely: belly, hips, chest, throat. A long, rough moan escaped me, the kind that sounds like it belongs to someone else. My legs shook. I tensed so hard for a second I thought I might split in two. And then came the wave, brutal, open, filthy, sweeping away the last of my control.

I stayed still, but my body didn’t. It kept contracting, still sensitive, still hungry. My skin burned. My mouth was dry and my lips were swollen from biting them. I could feel my pulse in my crotch like a second breath. I didn’t cry. I laughed once, softly, disbelievingly, as if I had just discovered a secret room inside myself.

***

I touched myself again slowly, this time with less urgency and more curiosity, like someone exploring after breaking something that had remained intact for years. I spread my fingers wider, felt the swelling, the too-lively sensitivity, the need to keep going. And I did.

The fantasy changed again. Carolina straddled my belly, pressing her sex against mine through the fabric, soaking it too, moving slowly at first, then faster, rubbing herself with an impatience that made me clench my teeth. Marcos stayed behind me, unclasping my bra with the filthy calm of someone who knows he’s going to win. He slid the straps off my shoulders and kissed the upper part of my back while she cupped my face to kiss me with her tongue, invading my mouth with an intensity that left me breathless. I arched between the two of them, pushing against one, offering myself to the other, turned into the exact center of a fire that I no longer wanted to put out.

It was more than pleasure. It was a kind of recognition. As if my body was finally saying: ah, this was mine too. This was here too. This is what I look like too.

I slid two fingers inside myself, slowly, and was surprised by how easily they went in. I was so open it was almost embarrassing, and embarrassment, instead of stopping me, only turned me on more. I moved my hand in and out, searching myself firmly, while my thumb returned to my clit and the rest of my hand became slick with wetness. The sound of my breathing grew more irregular. Outside, it kept raining with the same violence.

I imagined Marcos whispering in my ear, “That’s it, fuck, just like that.” I imagined Carolina answering with a short laugh before biting my neck. I imagined my body between them, made into a single need: more, more, more. The bed creaked when I shifted position, and that vulgar noise excited me even more, as if the room were participating too.

Then I came a second time, harder than the first. It wasn’t elegant or clean. It was a convulsion that bent me in half, made me drive my heels into the mattress and clutch the sheet in my fingers. The orgasm left me speechless and breathless, while a hot current rose from my belly to my face and made me feel absurdly alive. When it finally eased, I stayed there panting, my body sticky and my mind blank.

***

That dawn I didn’t reach any final conclusion about who I was or what I was going to do with all of it. I didn’t know whether I would ever tell Tomás. I didn’t know whether Carolina would ever touch my forearm at a party again and I would stand still, letting myself be touched. I didn’t know whether I would think about Marcos again or whether that dawn in his apartment would stay stored away forever, warming me on other lonely nights.

The only thing I knew was this: my desire was mine. It didn’t belong to the society that had taught me to fear it. It didn’t belong to the family that had taught me to classify myself. It didn’t belong to the men I had been with or the women I had avoided. It was mine, and for the first time in thirty-two years I could look at it straight on without needing to call it anything else.

I fell asleep near sunrise, with gray light filtering through the blind. I dreamed of a river. In the dream I was sitting on the bank, barefoot, and the water was running over my ankles. I was in no hurry to cross.

***

Two years have passed since that night. I’m still married to Tomás. Carolina left the studio in August and moved to another city; I never touched her arm again, nor she mine, but she still writes to me sometimes to recommend books and I answer calmly. There are things that happen only in a dark room and are no less true for that.

Sometimes I return to the practice I improvised that night. I switch off my phone, lower the blind, breathe. I let myself drift wherever my body wants to go, without directing traffic. Some nights a stranger with a deep voice appears. Other nights, a man I never knew. Other nights, both at once, mixed together, with no contradiction.

I haven’t told anyone this. I’m writing it here because someone needs to read it and understand that you can live fully without forcing yourself to split in two. That desire is not betrayal. That looking at yourself without censorship is the only way to know what material dreams are made of.

If tonight you’re alone in your room, lights off, with a question turning over and over inside you, do yourself a favor: don’t answer it with fear. Breathe. Touch yourself. Listen to yourself. What you discover will be yours, and it will be real, even if no one else ever knows.
