The Confession That Changed Everything at the Boarding School

I was born into a family of unshakable principles. My mother came from a long religious tradition, and my father was the kind of Catholic who doesn’t compromise. Together they made up an austere couple, devoted to parish service and daily prayer. At home, the calendar was marked by saints’ days, fasts, and Mass.

My mother always wore modest clothes: long skirts, blouses buttoned all the way up, no necklines, no bright colors. And she dressed me the same way. What she didn’t account for was that both she and I had figures that even the most demure clothing couldn’t quite hide. The men in the neighborhood noticed, even if they pretended not to. My father, by contrast, seemed genuinely oblivious to those things. As I learned years later, my mother and he had barely had any intimacy since the time I was conceived.

I grew up without close friends, without television, and without my own phone until well into my teens. The school I attended was religious, mixed in theory, but with such a strict separation between genders that it felt like a different era. I was a good student, quiet, and, by my parents’ decision, completely ignorant of anything to do with the body, desire, or sex.

Until the conversations in the school bathrooms began to fill those gaps.

The girls talked without lowering their voices when they thought they were alone. I would go in quietly, stay in the stall farthest away, and listen.

—Did you hear about Daniela, the one in second year? —said a voice I recognized as Fernanda’s, the biggest gossip in the class.

—What happened?

—They had to pull her out of school. They say she got pregnant by Father Esteban.

A brief silence, then a collective gasp.

—But she’s fifteen...

—That’s why they took her out, not him. They sent her to live with some uncles in another city. And the father? Nothing. Because the headmistress doesn’t want a scandal.

—And is it true about Sister Graciela?

—That they found her in her room with a student. Both of them naked. The girl left before dawn, but someone saw them come out.

Stifled laughter. Discomfort mixed with curiosity.

—They say she has a special talent for calming nervous students...

More laughter. I stayed perfectly still until they left.

I couldn’t stop thinking about what I’d heard.

Not with disgust, which was what I was supposed to feel. But with something like curiosity, mixed with something I still didn’t know how to name.

The night everything changed was a Tuesday in November.

I woke shortly after one in the morning, hot and not quite sure why. I got up without turning on the light, wearing only the thin cotton nightgown I slept in, and went toward the boarding school kitchen, which was at the far end of the main corridor.

As I passed Sister Graciela’s room, I saw that the door was slightly open. And in the faint light spilling from inside, I saw a girl hurrying out, her clothes folded against her chest and her bare feet on the cold floor.

I froze.

The girl disappeared down the hallway without looking at me. And then Sister Graciela appeared in the doorway. She was completely naked. When she saw me, she froze too, one hand still on the edge of the door.

I don’t know how long we stood there, looking at each other.

—Come in —she said quietly.

And I went in. I don’t know why. Or I do know, but it’s hard to admit: something in me wanted to understand what had happened in that room. What had made that girl leave with that expression on her face.

The sister closed the door with the latch. She didn’t say anything. She came up behind me, gently moved my hair away from my neck as if I might break, and kissed me just below the ear.

I felt a shiver start in my shoulders and run all the way down to my knees.

I should run. That’s what I should do.

But I didn’t move.

She undressed me slowly, without words. Her hands traced every curve as if she were reading something written on my body. Her hands were warm. When she kissed my breasts, her lips on my left nipple, I closed my eyes and let my head fall back without realizing it.

She laid me on the bed and licked slowly between my legs, with a precision that made my knees give way and my fingers clutch the sheets. I didn’t know a body could feel that. I had no reference, no comparison. I only knew that at some point I began to tremble in a different way, and that something opened inside me that never closed again.

I had three orgasms that night. I had never had one before.

We fell asleep wrapped in each other’s arms until dawn began to break. When Sister Graciela woke me, she told me to go back to my room before the corridor started filling up. I obeyed.

I walked back with my nightgown slightly wrinkled and a strange sensation in my body, as if I had been rearranged from the inside.

During the following weeks, I went back to her room several times. Sister Graciela taught me things I absorbed with such speed that she sometimes seemed surprised. I learned how to touch her, how to read her, how to tell when she wanted me to go slowly and when she didn’t. I learned what pleasure was without names, without categories, without the guilt my parents had installed in me as if it were another organ.

But guilt came anyway. It took a few weeks, but it came.

One afternoon, while everyone was in the refectory, I decided to go to confession. I don’t know exactly why I chose Father Esteban, the same one the girls talked about in the bathroom. Maybe because I already knew he wasn’t a man who would be scandalized easily.

I found him in his office, going over papers. He looked at me when I walked in and took a second longer than necessary to tear his eyes away from my figure.

—How can I help you, my child?

—I want to confess, Father.

He took me to his room, not the confessional. He invited me to sit on the small sofa by the window and took out a bottle of communion wine, as he said, to calm my nerves.

We drank wine. I talked. I told him everything that had happened with Sister Graciela, in more detail than I had intended. The alcohol loosened my tongue, and as I recounted each scene I realized that remembering them out loud was arousing me in a way I hadn’t expected.

Father Esteban listened without interrupting. His elbows were braced on his knees and his eyes fixed on me.

—Did she touch your breasts? —he asked when I finished.

—Yes, Father.

—Can you show me how she did it?

I should have left then. I should have stood up and walked out. But I didn’t. I unbuttoned the top buttons of my blouse and took his hand and placed it on me.

He began to caress me carefully. The touch of his fingers was different from Sister Graciela’s: heavier, slower, with a different pressure that made me breathe harder at once.

—And down there? —he asked. —Did she touch you there too?

I lifted my skirt. I took off my underwear. I guided his hand.

What followed was slow and methodical. His fingers explored me with deliberate calm, drawing out moans I tried to swallow back. When he noticed I was completely wet, he lifted his eyes to mine with an expression that was hard to read: half satisfaction, half something darker.

—Are you a virgin? —he asked.

—Yes —I answered.

—Do you want to stop being one?

I didn’t think about it very much.

—Yes, Father.

He undressed without haste. When I saw him, I understood why the girls in the bathroom talked about him with that mixture of laughter and admiration. He was much bigger than I had imagined he could be. I kept looking at him, not knowing what to do, and he noticed.

—Come —he said, and guided me patiently.

He taught me what to do with my hands, with my mouth. I explored him carefully at first, then with more confidence, while he watched me with satisfaction and told me I was doing very well. His words aroused me almost as much as the act itself. I had, I discovered, a natural aptitude for that kind of learning.

When the time came for him to take me, he used lubricant carefully and positioned me on the bed. I’m not going to say it didn’t hurt, because it did. But the pain was brief, and what came after was something for which I had no words then.

I gave myself over without reserve. He was patient at first, and then, when it was no longer necessary, he stopped being patient.

***

The weeks that followed are blurred in my memory, but in a pleasant way. I would leave Sister Graciela’s room and cross the hallway to Father Esteban’s. Or the other way around. Or all three of us would coincide at some point, which was something else entirely and more complicated, but that I also learned to handle.

Before that school year ended, I had stopped being the serious, reserved girl no one noticed in the hallways. It wasn’t that I had changed the way I dressed or my behavior in class. But something in me was different, and those who know how to look could see it.

My mother still dressed me in long skirts when I went home on weekends. My father still prayed before every meal. And I sat at the table with them, answered questions about my grades and about school activities.

Everything’s fine, Mom. Everything’s fine, Dad.

And I thought about what waited for me on Monday, when I went back to the boarding school.

I never told them anything. There was nothing to tell. They lived in a world that, for me, was already completely foreign, even if I still seemed to be part of it. The religious school they had chosen to protect me from the world had been, precisely, the place where I learned the most about it.

That, I think, is what would have surprised them most if they had ever known.
