She Came Back to My Door After Three Months
Three months had passed since the last time I heard her voice. Three months counted day by day, calculating how many hours had gone by since that slamming door that still echoed at the back of my head. Lucía had left without an address, without excuses, leaving only a short note on the kitchen table that said, “I need to think.” I had learned to live with that silence, or at least I had learned to pretend I had.
That night, it was raining with that fine October rain that seems as though it will never end. I was reading on the sofa, half a glass of red wine beside me and the lamp turned low, when there were three knocks at the door. Three clear knocks, evenly spaced. I went still. No one in the building knocked like that at that hour.
I peered through the peephole and my breath caught.
I opened the door. And there she was. Her coat soaked through, her hair plastered to her forehead, her lips purple with cold. She had no bag, no umbrella, not even a few prepared words. She only looked at me as if she had spent months rehearsing that look and, upon seeing me, had forgotten the script.
“Lucía,” I said, and my own voice sounded strange to me.
She didn’t answer. She took one step forward, just enough to cross the threshold, and closed the door behind her with the hand she had free. The other had already seized me by the nape.
The first kiss wasn’t sweet. It was a three-month kiss, a kiss flavored with red wine and rain, with the hunger belonging only to someone who knows what she lost and has come to take it back. I let her do it, because my body had decided before my head. I felt her trembling. I didn’t know whether it was from cold or anger.
“I hated you,” she murmured against my mouth. “Every morning I got up hating you. And every night I fell asleep missing you.”
“Then why did you leave?”
She pulled away only far enough to look me in the eyes. Her mascara had run. I hadn’t noticed before.
“Because I was afraid. And because I was an idiot. But I didn’t come tonight to explain myself.”
She pushed me against the wall in the entryway. She did it slowly, without violence, but with a determination that left no room for conversation. Her knee slipped between mine. I felt it hard, demanding. I dropped the book I was still holding in my left hand and heard it hit the wooden floor.
“I’m in charge tonight,” she said, and it wasn’t a question.
I nodded. Not out of habit, but because it was true. I had spent three months turning it over in my head, three months imagining what I would say if she came back, and the answer turned out to be no words at all. Just a nod.
She dragged me into the living room without letting go of my hand. Her coat fell along the way, then her shoes. The rain had seeped in beneath the collar of her shirt, and the fabric showed through over her shoulders and collarbones. I touched her skin and it was ice-cold.
“You’re freezing.”
“Then warm me up.”
I tried to push her toward the sofa, to reclaim some initiative, but she reversed the movement with an ease that betrayed how much thought she had given to this moment. I ended up sitting down, with her standing in front of me, looking down at me with that crooked smile I had always hated and always desired in equal measure.
“Take it off,” she said, indicating my blouse with a tilt of her chin.
I did. Button by button, watching her. When I reached the last one, she had already unbuttoned her jeans and let them fall at her feet. She wore nothing underneath. Three months later and she was still the most perfectly formed woman I had ever seen: firm thigh, narrow hip, the small mole above her left pelvic bone that I used to bite on purpose.
I knelt without her asking me to.
“Wait.”
I lifted my face. Lucía had taken me by the chin, not forcefully, her palm open. She made me hold her gaze.
“Slowly. There’s no hurry tonight. We’ve gone three months without time; don’t waste it in a minute.”

I obeyed her. I obeyed her as I had never obeyed anyone. I began with her thighs, with the pale inner flesh, with that place where the skin is almost translucent. I moved upward with my mouth open, not touching yet where she was waiting. I heard her exhale sharply when I brushed her groin with my cheek.
“Look at me while you do it,” she said, gripping my hair with her right hand.
I did. I raised my eyes without breaking contact with her and found her head thrown back, her neck long, a vein standing out beneath her wet skin. I plunged my tongue in without warning. I heard her swear under her breath, an ugly word, the kind that only slipped out when she lost control.
I pulled her underwear down with my fingers, slowly, letting the fabric slide over the curve of her hips. She was wet, yes, but tense too, her legs spread just enough to let me in with my mouth and tongue. I kissed her there with the patience of someone who knows the house and comes back to touch every door. The flesh was hot, the taste salty and strong, and she began to breathe more deeply, breaking the air into short moans that gathered in her throat.
“That…” she said, almost angrily. “There. Don’t stop.”
I didn’t stop. I ran my tongue along the center, then to one side, then back to the center, persisting until her hips began to seek the movement on their own. I held her buttocks with both hands, feeling the tension rising through her thighs and loosening in her knees. When she moaned, she did it through clenched teeth, as if she didn’t want to give me the full sound. I drew it out of her anyway, one broken breath after another.
She let me go on for a long time. I was learning her geometry all over again, the pauses she liked, the exact angle at which her legs went slack. When she began to tremble, she tightened her grip on my hair. When I felt she was close, she pulled me away.
“Not like that. Not the first time. I don’t want to finish standing in the living room like strangers.”
I raised my head and saw the moisture clinging to her skin, her chest rising and falling rapidly, her mouth half open. The expression on her face wasn’t shame. It was poorly contained hunger.
She pulled me up from the floor by my wrists. Her hands were small, but that night they weighed more than ever. She led me down the hallway, leaving a trail of clothes behind us, to the bedroom that for three months had served only to make us lose sleep.
“Lie down.”
I lay down. She remained standing at the edge of the bed for a moment, looking at me as one studies something one nearly lost. Then she climbed on top without touching me. She placed her knees on either side of my hips and hovered there, a finger’s breadth from my skin. I felt the heat radiating from her without any need for contact.
“I want you to tell me you stayed,” she murmured.
“Stayed where?”
“Here. That you didn’t look for anyone else. That you slept on this side of the bed.”
I swallowed. Not because I was lying, but because the truth frightened me more than any lie.
“I stayed. Every night.”
Then she lowered herself. She lowered herself with all her weight, her whole body, all the breath she had been holding in. Her mouth found mine and this time it was a long, slow kiss, almost cruel in its patience. Her hands moved over me from top to bottom with the possessiveness of someone reclaiming something that had never stopped being hers. When she rubbed herself against me, I felt the wet heat of her vulva through the fabric still separating us, and a moan escaped me that she caught with her mouth.
“Put your arms over your head,” she ordered, without releasing my lower lip. “Don’t move them until I tell you.”
I did. I offered her my wrists. She held them with one hand and began to explore me with the other, unhurried, not skipping a single inch. She kissed every rib. She bit the side of my left breast, right where I have that thin scar from falling off my bicycle when I was twelve. She licked my navel with an almost obscene concentration. Then she went lower still, burying her face between my legs, spreading me with her fingers and pushing her tongue inside without ceremony, without gentleness, like someone claiming a place she already knew.
I couldn’t move. Not because of the strength of her hand, which wasn’t that great either, but because I had given her my word, and that night my word mattered more than my pleasure.
“Does it hurt when I go slowly?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
She did it again, even more slowly, licking me from below, going in and out with a wet insistence that made me arch my back against the mattress. Her fingers opened me, held me, forced me to remain still while her mouth worked with brutal precision. I began to lose my footing almost at once. I felt my thighs trembling, my breath slipping away to some place I didn’t know how to control.
“Don’t close your eyes.”
I opened them. I looked at her from above, my own chin resting against my chest, and what I saw was what I had been missing for three months: her between my legs, her still-damp hair falling over her cheekbones, her eyes fixed on mine as if the gaze itself were part of the bargain.
When she noticed I was close, she pulled away only to make me wait for her. She knelt on the mattress, leaned over, and kissed my mouth with the same wetness she had left burning below.
“Now me,” she said. “And I don’t want tenderness. Do it like you did when you were furious.”
***
It took a while for the fury to find me, because seeing her like that, open over me, smelling of rain and of herself, what I felt first was gratitude. But then it came. The fury of three months came—the fury of unanswered calls, of the empty side of the bed. I grabbed her thighs, dug my fingers into them, and drew her toward my mouth as if I were going to devour her.
She held on to the headboard. She began to move, slowly at first, then with a rhythm that betrayed how long she had been holding back. I worked without lifting my head, without pauses, without the courtesies of our first times. I felt her give in much sooner than she would have wanted. Her breathing became erratic, her hips began to strike my face with small, desperate movements. My tongue, my lips, my fingers—everything tightened the tide until I saw her break over me with a dry shudder and a muffled curse.
“Wait, wait,” she panted.
I didn’t wait. And she didn’t want me to wait either. She said it only to hear herself say it, to pretend she still had control when she no longer did. She came like that, with a muffled word that never quite became a word, biting her fist and collapsing forward until she rested her forehead against the wall.
She stayed still for a while. I felt her pulse gradually slow against my cheek. Then she rolled onto her back and stared at the ceiling as if she had never seen it before.
I sat up just enough to look at her. Her chest was still rising and falling quickly, her hair tangled across the pillow, her mouth still half open. I took her by the waist and slowly turned her over, settling on top of her without rushing her, letting her feel my weight before I pushed. I entered her with one slow, deep movement, and the moan she gave me went through my entire body. Her nails dug into my back when I began to move, first searching for a rhythm, then deliberately breaking it, because the night was ours and there was nothing to measure.
“More,” she asked, her voice broken.
“Say it properly.”
“Harder. Fuck me harder.”
I obeyed her. I held her hips and lifted her to sink into her again and again, until the bed began to complain beneath us. The wet sound of our bodies filled the room, mingling with her ragged breathing and my own moans. She opened her legs wider, took all of me, and I watched her lose every last trace of distance, pride, and fear. I brushed her hair back so I could see her better when she fell apart again, trembling, trying to resist the inevitable.
“I’m not leaving tomorrow,” she said, still unable to catch her breath.
“I didn’t ask you to stay.”
“I know. But I’m not leaving.”
We went on like that, pressed together, sweaty, breathing as if we had run for miles. I kissed her neck until her skin grew tender, bit her shoulder, slipped my hand between her legs again to sustain the final trembling while I kept thrusting into her from above. When her belly tightened and her mouth broke into a long moan, I came too, gritting my teeth, sinking all the way into her as my body gave me a blind, hot jolt that left me empty for a moment.
I stayed on top of her for a while, my forehead resting on her shoulder, feeling our sweat slowly cool. Then I raised my head. Lucía was looking at me with that serious expression of hers, but now there was something else: exhaustion, relief, and an even deeper exhaustion, the kind that appears only when someone has decided to come back.
“I’m not apologizing,” she said. “Not tonight. Tonight I’m only asking you to let me stay. Tomorrow we’ll see what needs to be said.”
I nodded. There wasn’t much more to add.
She switched off the lamp with an awkward slap, curled up against my side, and slipped one leg between mine as if she had never stopped doing it. The rain was still falling outside, finer now, almost a whisper. I stayed awake a while longer, listening to her breathe, feeling the exact weight I had missed for three months.
I thought morning would bring difficult conversations. I thought we would have to talk about why she had left, what she had done during those weeks, what I had done. I thought there would be reproaches, doubts, that perhaps none of this would mean anything beyond the night.
But I thought of one other thing too, and that was what finally let me sleep.
That this time, when she got scared again—because she would—I wouldn’t let her leave without telling me where she was going.
