What Happened in the Sauna When I Was Fifty

If someone had told me six months ago that I would have my first experience with a woman at fifty-one, I would have told them they were crazy. I wasn’t one of those women. I was a married woman, with two adult children and a life as neat as a box of tissues. The sauna at the hydrotherapy center had been part of my routine for eight years, just like the neighborhood hair salon or Sunday café au lait.

I love Ricardo. I’ve spent more than half my life with him, and it would be unfair to deny the good times. But the desire between us had gone out like a forgotten candle. There were no arguments or reproaches, only a slow resignation to the fact that each other’s body no longer stirred what it once had. I suspect he has a lover. I have no proof, only the instinct of women who have spent decades reading the same person. And the truth is, it doesn’t bother me as much as it should. At our age, pride becomes an awkward piece of furniture.

That November afternoon was like so many others. Ricardo dropped me off at the entrance to the complex, kissed my cheek dryly, and told me he’d be back at seven. I didn’t wait to see him drive off. I went into the changing rooms, opened my locker, and paused for a moment in front of the full-length mirror before stripping completely.

I’m not deluding myself. I know that at fifty-one I no longer have the skin I had at twenty, nor my breasts where they used to be. But I also know how to recognize what I have left. A mouth still well-shaped, a waist that is still a waist, legs I’m not ashamed of. Out on the street, men my age still turn to look. And that, however silly it may sound, helps keep you standing.

I met Solange in that same sauna almost a year earlier. Ten years older than me, French by birth though she had spent half her life in this country. Short-cropped gray hair, very light green eyes, and a slow way of speaking that made other people listen. We started ending up there together on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Then, without ever agreeing to it, we started waiting for each other. If I got there first, I saved her a place in the booth. If she arrived first, she’d signal me from inside.

—You have a very beautiful neck —she told me the first day we really talked—. You never noticed, did you? Women don’t look at ourselves the way we should.

She said it without any obvious ulterior motive, and I thanked her with a smile. But the comment stuck to me all day. That night, over dinner with Ricardo, I found myself touching my neck two or three times without meaning to.

The weeks passed and the compliments multiplied. That my skin looked like that of a younger woman. That my hands were fine. That I had the straight back of someone who doesn’t give up. I laughed and told her she was exaggerating, but inside I kept every word like someone stuffing small stones into a pocket.

One afternoon in January, inside the booth and with steam erasing everything except the outlines, Solange put a hand on my arm. Just a brush. I could have pulled away, I could have said something, I could have turned it into a joke. I did nothing. I stayed still, feeling the heat of her palm on my wet skin, and I understood that my stillness was a response as clear as any word.

My body had remembered that it still knew how to ask questions.

That night I didn’t sleep. Not from guilt, not from fear, but because of something I hadn’t felt in years: curiosity.

The following Thursday, Solange was waiting for me in the booth with her towel folded beside the bench. She was completely naked.

—Let’s try it like this today —she said, as if suggesting a different brand of coffee—. The towel in here is ridiculous. You sweat more, it gets in the way. We’re alone at this hour.

I swallowed and nodded. I let my towel drop with a gesture that was meant to look natural and didn’t. I sat facing her, separated by a meter of thick air, and for the first time in my life I was naked in front of another woman without a changing room, a doctor, or a little daughter involved.

Solange wasn’t looking at me brazenly. She was looking at me patiently. Like someone who has time and knows that looking is also a way of touching. I tried to hold her gaze and not hold it at the same time, tried to think of something else and couldn’t think of anything else. Every time the silence stretched too long, one of us would make some dumb comment and the other would laugh with too much enthusiasm.

—You’re trembling a little —she said after a while.

—It’s the heat.

—No.

She got up from the bench opposite and came to sit on mine. Her thigh brushed mine. I closed my eyes. I felt her hand on my knee, moving slowly upward, unhurried, waiting for me to say stop. I didn’t say it. Her palm reached halfway up my thigh and stopped there, measuring, while my skin went electric beneath her touch.

—If you want me to stop, say so now —she murmured near my ear.

I said nothing. And that silence was my consent.

Solange tilted her head and kissed me, first barely brushing my lips, then parting them with a calm that undid me. Her tongue entered slowly, exploring, and I answered with a hungry clumsiness that embarrassed me for only an instant. She smelled of steam, neutral soap, clean skin, and something deeper, more animal. I grabbed her shoulder so I wouldn’t lose my balance and felt under my fingers the firmness of her muscles, the warm reality of a body that wasn’t mine and yet was already beginning to belong to me in my imagination.

Her hand kept going upward. She caressed the inner side of my thigh, not yet touching where I wanted her to touch, and that delay made me burn. I shifted barely at all, seeking her palm, and she smiled against my mouth, as if she had read my mind. Then she slipped two fingers between my legs and found me already drenched, open, with a shame so intense it took my breath away.

—Look at you —she whispered—. So wet and so serious.

I didn’t answer. My nipples were hard, pressed against my skin, and she took them in her hands with insolent naturalness, weighing them, kneading them, tugging just enough to send a moan rising from the bottom of my throat. My tips burned and at the same time I wanted more, wanted her to squeeze hard, shake me, make me forget even my own name. Solange lowered her face to my chest and sucked one nipple with the same attention with which she had earlier spoken about a beautiful neck. Slow, insistent, in no hurry to finish ever.

—You have beautiful tits —she said against my skin—. Prettier than you think.

I leaned back, bracing my hands on the bench, and she took the opportunity to lick my other nipple, alternating sucks and gentle bites that made me writhe. I felt the heat concentrate between my legs, a thick pulse, unbearable. When Solange slipped a hand between my thighs and rubbed my clit with two fingers, I jerked so suddenly I almost fell off the bench.

—Slowly —she ordered—. Breathe.

I breathed. Or tried to. The steam came into my mouth as if I were about to drown, and yet it held me up. Solange opened my body wider with her hand, parted the wet fold of my lips, and touched me directly, no detours, as if she knew exactly which rhythm would destroy me. The pressure built, certain, cruel in its precision. I clenched my teeth, feeling pleasure turn into a physical need, an almost painful urgency.

—I want to see you come —she said.

The sentence hit me harder than her hand. No one had ever spoken to me like that. No one had ever looked at me with that mix of dominance and tenderness. She gently pushed me back and I reclined against the wall of the booth, legs open and breathing in pieces. Solange dropped to her knees in front of me and parted my pussy lips with her fingers to look closely, without shame, as if she were admiring an opened fruit. Then she buried her head between my legs and began to lick me with ferocious patience, slowly at first, then with a harder, more precise tongue, drawing circles and strokes that tore increasingly high moans from me.

She held my hips with both hands so I wouldn’t move. I writhed anyway. My head spun. I felt her entire mouth working against my sex, soaking me further, entering me with her tongue until I trembled in a way that was no longer shame but surrender. When she slid two fingers inside me, they went in easily, slipping through my juices, and I let out a long moan, almost a cry, while she kept sucking my clit with a hunger that broke me into a thousand pieces.

—That’s it —she murmured—. Let go.

And I let go. I came with a violence that blinded me for an instant, clenching around her fingers, soaking her hand and her mouth, trembling from top to bottom with an intensity I had never felt, not even in my best years. Solange didn’t pull away until my body began to calm. Then she kissed the inside of my thigh, then my pubis, then my belly, as if she were slowly returning me to my place.

I looked at her with a mixture of bewilderment and renewed hunger. Solange straightened up, sat down opposite me again, and kissed me as if she wanted to swallow me whole. I tasted myself on her mouth, mine mixed with hers, and that proof set me on fire again. I slid my hand between her legs on pure impulse and found her cunt hot, slippery, open. She let out a short sigh and threw her head back.

—Now it’s my turn —she said.

Then she gestured with one hand for me to turn around. I obeyed, still trembling, and got on my knees on the bench while she positioned herself behind me. I felt her fingers parting my buttocks, the cool air hitting my wet ass, and then the tip of her tongue tracing my opening, slow, from behind, with an impudence that made me release a muffled moan against the wood. Solange ate my ass and my cunt in turn, once again alternating licks, sucks, and finger thrusts until my whole body tightened again, on the edge of another explosion.

—Soak me —she whispered—. I want to feel how you break.

Then the booth timer sounded with its sharp beep, reminding us of the time. We looked at each other, panting, our skin shining with sweat and desire. We left the booth when the timer warned us. Solange took me by the arm to the private showers, those two individual cubicles in the back that almost nobody uses on weekdays. She closed the door of hers and held out her hand for me to come in with her. I went in.

Under the warm water, her fingers dared to do more. I braced myself against the tiles so I wouldn’t fall. I closed my eyes. What happened there wasn’t like anything I had lived before. It wasn’t the anxious urgency of my twenties nor the comfortable routine of my forties. It was something else. It was a woman who knew exactly where my questions were and took the trouble to answer them one by one, without skipping any.

With water running over our bodies, Solange turned me back against the wall and lifted one leg to my hip. Her hand slipped between my buttocks, probing, opening me, and the water turned every touch into lightning. She kissed me while sliding two fingers inside me again, pumping slowly, then pressed me against her palm to rub my clit with the heel of her hand. I was breathing in short gasps, my back arched, feeling pleasure pile up inside me again, higher, dirtier, more urgent.

—Look at me —she ordered.

I looked at her. Her gray hair was plastered wet to her forehead, her mouth half-open, her green eyes fixed on me with an almost ferocious calm. She fucked me harder with her fingers, setting a steady rhythm, while her other hand gripped the back of my neck. I heard myself say her name like a plea, and then she lowered her head and sucked me again, hard, merciless, until the orgasm ran up my spine and exploded in my belly and legs, forcing me to cling to her so I wouldn’t slide to the floor.

When pleasure hit me, I bit my lip so I wouldn’t make a sound. Solange held my head with one hand so I wouldn’t bump against the tiles and with the other kept touching me until the end. Then she kissed my temple, brushed the wet hair out of my face, and smiled.

—Welcome —she said simply.

Ricardo picked me up at seven-fifteen. My hair was still damp and I had a scent of someone else’s soap over my own perfume. He asked me how the sauna was, and I told him what I always do: that it was great, that it was the most relaxing thing in my whole week. He nodded, looking at the road, and turned on the radio.

In the car I thought I ought to feel guilty. I waited a while for guilt to show up, like someone waiting for a train they know is coming. But it didn’t come. In its place there was a strange calm, a feeling of having solved something that had long gone unresolved.

That night I ate little, went to bed early, and Ricardo didn’t ask me why. Lying in the dark, I went over the day like someone replaying a film. The towel falling to the floor. Her hand on my knee. The warm water. Her voice saying “welcome.”

***

It has been five months since that afternoon. I still go to the sauna on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I still haven’t told Ricardo anything, and I still don’t feel any urge to. What I have with Solange doesn’t take anything away from what I have with my husband, because a long time ago I stopped having that with my husband. They are different territories, watered by different rivers.

Sometimes, when I leave the center and see Ricardo waiting for me in the car with the radio on and his eyes a little lost, I wonder whether he too has his own secret corner somewhere. Whether he too has a Solange, a booth, warm water. I hope he does. At fifty-one, you start to wish other people will find their own thing too.

What I learned in that sauna wasn’t just a woman’s body. I learned that desire doesn’t end: it changes shape, hides, waits. And one day, in a steam-filled booth, someone puts a hand on your arm and everything you thought you knew about yourself crumbles like a sugar cube in coffee.

Tomorrow is Thursday. Solange has already sent me a message. She says she’ll bring a surprise this afternoon.

I’ll be there.
