What No One Saw Between Two Women at Closing Time
The corridor between the kitchen and the dining room is barely three meters long, but things happen in those three meters. Every time Valeria came through to pick up the plates, she looked at me for a second too long. Just one second, but enough. Her dark eyes, shining under the kitchen’s cold lights, said something neither of us dared to say out loud.
We’d been like that for almost two months. Looks. Smiles cut short halfway. A brush against the arm that could have been accidental and that we both knew wasn’t. One Tuesday she straightened the collar of my uniform before I went out to the dining room, and I stood still for a moment as if a current had run through the nape of my neck.
I didn’t want to make the first move. Valeria was married, had two children, a whole life built with someone else. I wasn’t going to be the one to stick my finger into that mechanism and make it fly apart. So I limited myself to looking at her, to returning her smiles, and to scrubbing the griddle with more energy than necessary every time something I shouldn’t be thinking about crossed my mind.
That night we had a late close. Friday dinner service, more than a hundred covers, the kitchen nonstop since seven. When the last diner asked for the bill, it was almost twelve and my legs felt like concrete and my arms like lead.
Valeria started sending people home as soon as the dining room emptied. First the two waiters on the extra shift. Then the cloakroom girl, who left without asking questions. After that the other cook, who welcomed the night off without asking for explanations. I finished scrubbing the griddle, emptied the bins, swept the kitchen floor, and switched off the extractor hood. The sound of the motor dying away left a silence that felt more noticeable than usual. We were just two people in the building.
I went to the changing room. It was empty and smelled of cleaning products and the whole night. From the other side of the room, the soft sound of the cash register could be heard. Valeria doing the close. Alone.
I took off my clogs, the uniform, the apron stained with the night’s sauces. I pulled my things out of the locker and started dressing without any hurry: jeans first, then the shirt. I left the last three buttons undone, the shirt open down the middle, staring without really seeing the tiles at the back of the changing room. I was too tired to think clearly. Or so I told myself.
Then I felt a hand on my arm. Gentle, but firm.
I turned around.
Valeria was less than a meter away, still wearing her apron, with one loose strand stuck to her forehead by the night’s sweat. Her cheeks were flushed. Her breathing a little faster than normal, as if she had come running from the register or as if she had spent a while working up the courage to push through that door.
She was biting her lower lip.
She didn’t say anything. She lowered her gaze to my hand and took it, intertwining her fingers with mine. Hers was ice-cold and trembling, so instinctively I closed my fingers around it. She squeezed too. We stayed like that for a moment, looking at our joined hands as if they belonged to someone else, as if what was happening between us needed that point of support to hold itself up.
Then she lifted her eyes.
Her other hand rose slowly to my face, still cold, still trembling, and turned me toward her with a tenderness that tightened something in my chest. We melted into a long, still kiss. Her lips were soft and tasted of coffee and the whole night. There was no hurry. Just that sustained contact, as if we both needed to make sure it was real before going any further.
When I pulled my mouth away from hers, the words came out on their own:
—Valeria, we shouldn’t be doing this.
She put a finger over my lips.
—I know we shouldn’t —she said, her voice hoarse from having gone so long without speaking—. But I’ve been thinking about this moment for too long. Please, don’t stop now.
A tear slid down her cheek, small and silent, while she waited for me to answer. It wasn’t manipulation. It was exactly the look of someone doing something that frightens them and that they can’t stop themselves from doing anyway. I knew her well enough to know the difference.
I cupped her face with both hands and kissed her again. This time hungrier. She answered in kind, pressing herself against me, her hands finding my waist and back, learning the shape of my body through the open shirt.
My hands moved over her: her shoulders, her back, the curve of her hips over the uniform trousers. Slowly, without false urgency. Little by little she relaxed, the trembling dissolving under each caress like sugar in hot water.
When her hand slid down and tried to touch me between the legs, I stepped back.
—Not there —I said quietly.
She looked at me, eyes wide, not quite understanding.
—My pleasure isn’t there —I explained, without drama—. From the waist up, anything you want. You can take the bra off if you want. The pants, no, don’t even try. Can you respect that?
She nodded, though I wasn’t sure she fully understood. It didn’t matter. She would understand as soon as we started.
Her fingers were still a little clumsy when she unbuttoned my shirt, slowly, as if she were afraid of breaking something. She let it fall from my shoulders and ran her palms over my torso, taking her time, learning every inch. Then she leaned in and started kissing my neck, my collarbone, my chest. Her mouth was careful, almost reverent. Every kiss was a question and an answer at the same time.
I shivered for real.
I grabbed her by the shoulders and stood her upright. I pulled her uniform polo over her head and she lifted her arms to help me. Underneath she wore a dark bra that contrasted with the light skin of her torso. I unclasped it, moved it aside, and for a moment we looked at each other without moving, the changing room in total silence around us.
She was simply perfect.
I leaned in and kissed her neck, moved down to her collarbone, kept going lower. I took one of her nipples into my mouth and she swallowed a sound between her teeth, fists clenched at both sides. Her hands rose to my head, not to direct me, just to cling to something. With every reaction of hers, something tightened in me too, a current starting in my stomach and spreading without asking permission.
—Fuck —she whispered, her breathing already uneven—. I didn’t know you were going to touch me like that.
I answered without lifting my face from her chest, licking slowly around the nipple, feeling it harden under my tongue.
—Like what?
—Like you know exactly where you break me.
The line hit me straight in the gut. I pushed her gently against the locker and lifted her chin to kiss her mouth again, deeper, dirtier. Our tongues tangled and the air in the changing room started to feel too hot, thick with saliva, short breaths, clothes dropping to the floor in a hurried clumsiness.
I slid a hand along her side, under the bra, and found the curve of her naked waist. Her skin was warm, sensitive. She arched her back just a little, asking for more contact, and a brief moan slipped out of her, too honest to hide.
—Don’t hold back —I murmured against her mouth—. If you want me to touch you, say it.
She swallowed. Her pupils looked enormous.
—Touch me.
The voice came out broken. More broken than even she had expected.
I moved my hand down her belly, not fast, not recklessly, tracing every inch as if I wanted to memorize it. Valeria gripped the edge of the locker with both hands and opened her legs just a little, a tiny gesture but unmistakable. I stared at that gap, at the way her body was already offering itself before I had even finished asking, and felt a stab of triumph as filthy as desire.
I slid her trousers down with a calm that made her release a desperate sigh. I took them off her hips, then her legs, and left them on the floor. Her underwear followed a second later, this time with less patience. When she was naked from the waist down, she didn’t take her hands off me for a single instant.
I looked between her legs, open in front of me, wet, trembling.
—You’re soaked —I said, plain and simple.
Valeria closed her eyes for a second, ashamed and excited at the same time.
—I’ve been like this with you in front of me for two months —she confessed—. Two months holding myself back from telling you I’m dying for you to put your tongue where nobody’s ever touched me the way I want you to touch me.
I let out a short, disbelieving laugh and kissed one thigh first, then the other, leaving little bites that made her jerk her hips forward. Then I held her from the backs of the thighs and lifted her just enough to settle her better against the locker, forcing her open to me more comfortably. She gave a low moan, almost angry at how good that felt.
Then I lowered my mouth.
The first contact made her tense all over. Just for a second. Then she melted with a long, trembling exhale. I tasted her slowly, unhurriedly, running my tongue over the most sensitive spot, parting the flesh with my fingers to find the exact point. Her hands were in my hair, squeezing and releasing, as if she didn’t know whether to command me or surrender. Her hips moved by instinct, seeking more pressure, more contact, more of everything.
—That’s it, fuck, that’s it —she said between clenched teeth—. Like that, don’t stop.
I obeyed, slipping in two fingers first, then a third when her body asked for it with an obvious tremor. I didn’t force anything. I went in slowly, letting her get used to it, until I felt her open fully around my hand. The sound that came from her when she caught the rhythm was something between a sob and a broken laugh, as if she were embarrassed by the amount of pleasure spilling out of her mouth.
—Look at me —I asked.
She opened her eyes with effort. She saw me kneeling between her legs, mouth shiny and hand working inside her, and her face completely fell apart. There was almost nothing left of the serious woman who gave orders on the floor, balanced the accounts, and smiled at impossible customers. Now she was only taut flesh, pure desire, a breath that couldn’t settle.
I quickened the pace and began combining my tongue with my hand, pushing right where her body was coming undone. Her back bumped softly against the metal of the locker and her nails dug into my scalp. The sound of her breathing was the only thing clearly audible in the changing room, above the distant hum of the refrigerator and the pulse of blood pounding in my ears.
—I’m getting nasty —she panted—. I’m getting real bad, fuck.
—Don’t get good now —I answered, my mouth wet against her—. Hold on a little longer.
The pressure gathered in her whole body in an almost violent way. I felt it in the tension of her thighs, in the way she clenched her jaw to keep from crying out, in the way her hips shook, seeking a friction impossible to ignore. And then the break came: a sharp shudder, a muffled moan that came from deep inside her, her knees wanting to give way while her whole body convulsed against my hands.
She came with her face thrown back, lips parted, breathing in ragged bursts. Her legs trembled so hard I had to hold her by the waist so she wouldn’t slide to the floor. I kept her there, still eating her slowly while still feeling the impact of her orgasm in the way her belly quivered.
When I pulled away, she was completely gone, with glassy eyes and a wet mouth, breathing as if she had just run up a hill. She looked at me for a second and then let out a tiny, disbelieving laugh, pure release.
—You’re trouble —she said.
—So are you.
I kissed her again, this time lifting her body with both hands until she was pressed against me, skin to skin, chest to chest. I wanted to feel all of her, feel her heart thudding inside her, feel how her legs were still trembling even though she’d already come. She hugged me with unexpected strength and buried her face in my shoulder.
—I don’t want you to stop —she murmured, almost embarrassed to ask.
I brushed the hair off her forehead and looked her in the eyes.
—Then don’t just sit there staring at the floor.
I had her sit on the wooden bench in the changing room. She spread her legs with tired obedience and drew me toward her by the waist, searching for my mouth as if she still didn’t have enough. I undressed just enough to be comfortable, without taking everything off, and settled on top of her in a way that made both of us gasp at once. The heat between her legs was still there, wet, shining, ready to start again.
Valeria looked at me with a mix of hunger and tenderness that left me more exposed than any nudity.
—I want to see you when you come —she said.
—You’ll see me.
She pushed me back a little, just enough to lower her gaze and slip her hand between us. Her fingers were still clumsy from the orgasm, but she found my center right away and started rubbing with a dirty insistence that tore an immediate moan from me. I guided her wrist so she’d know how to touch me, harder, higher, without fear of getting dirty. She learned fast when she was allowed to do it.
—Like that —I said, breathing against her neck—. Fuck, like that.
The sensation filled me from the inside in a slow, heavy, delicious way. Her pulse under my palm, her breathing hitting my neck, the wetness still alive between her fingers. We kissed with contained fury, the changing room turned into a tiny bubble where the whole world seemed reduced to our mouths, our hands, and the increasingly disordered noise of our bodies.
When I came, I did it holding on to her, forehead against her shoulder and a long moan escaping me without permission. She kept moving her hand for a couple more seconds, carrying me all the way through, all the way to the point of breathlessness. Then she went still, stroking me slowly, with a drunken smile at the corner of her mouth.
I pulled back a little, still trembling, and we stayed looking at each other like two people who had just crossed a door they didn’t know whether they would want to leave.
Tears were still falling from her, even though there was nothing anguished left on her face. Quite the opposite.
She took my hand and squeezed it. She didn’t say anything for a long while. The kitchen refrigerator hummed on the other side of the wall. Somewhere out in the street, someone passed by with the car stereo too loud and the sound reached the changing room muffled, then faded away.
—And now what? —she asked at last, in a very low voice.
I didn’t have a good answer for that. But I didn’t regret a thing either.
—Now we finish getting dressed and go home —I said—. And tomorrow we’re coworkers again.
She nodded slowly, though the two of us knew that going back to being just coworkers would require more than either of us was willing to admit at that moment. There are things that, once they happen, no longer fit in the same space as before. They stay there, taking up room, changing the shape of everything around them.
That night was the first. It would not be the last.
