It had all started as just another dinner among neighbors. Hugo and Sonia lived on the same landing as Nadia and me, and ours had long since ceased to have any secrets. What changed that night was the presence of the newcomers: Iván and Lucía, a young couple who had moved into the apartment downstairs only a few weeks earlier and still didn’t quite know what they were getting into.

Lucía, Iván, Nadia and I stayed a little longer, sitting around and talking about how we had ended up in all that, almost without meaning to. It didn’t take us too long to drag ourselves into bed either. Iván and Lucía slept in one of the free rooms.

They still had energy left. From our room we heard them for a good while, until exhaustion won out over us and we fell asleep, curled up together, certain that the newbies were already part of the group.
