Desire

Lorena opened the suitcase to help put away the clothes and found the toys. Her new cook was watching from the doorway, not a shred of shame on her face.

I posted an ad looking for two discreet gentlemen. When I opened the suite door and saw them waiting, I knew that night would have no limits.

I heard their moans through the wall and lay still, imagining. I didn’t know that curiosity would end with me between the two of them.

We grew up together, studied together, and kept the same secret for years. The night we buried their parents, we finally said everything out loud.

We had been inviting him over after every dinner for months. This time we wanted more: two days locked away with him, no clock, no neighbors, no brakes.

He told me I was free to leave when I paid my debt. There were no chains on that door, and yet my feet didn’t move.

I was twenty and thought I understood my desires—until my mother-in-law opened that album and showed me who she had been. That night I turned off the light and understood everything.

Five minutes trapped between a wall and a throne bearer who smelled of rosemary and wood. I didn’t know his name, but I knew I’d look for him again that night.

She had spent years convincing herself that desire belonged to the past, until she accepted an invitation she shouldn’t have and unfamiliar hands reminded her who she was.

He had known for a month that he loved her as more than a friend. When she opened her apartment door, he knew he could no longer pretend.

No one had ever taught me to desire myself. That morning, with the house empty and the light coming in through the window, I taught myself.

She got up angry because he was watching soccer and didn’t even notice her. She had no idea that bumping the table would ignite the whole afternoon.

I spent all day imagining the exact moment the key would turn in the lock. I wasn’t going to say a word—just let him find me like that, waiting.

The suitcases still unpacked and, under one of the beds, a stack of old magazines that none of the three siblings could stop staring at that hot afternoon.

When the cool air hit my naked skin, I understood we weren’t in the bedroom: he had taken me out to the garden, tied up and in the dark, where anyone could have seen me.

We’d spent months inventing excuses not to be alone. That early morning, the excuses ran out, and the kitchen stopped being just a kitchen.

I went up to his landing in jeans that showed everything and my heart in my throat. No one answered. When I gave up, the elevator doors opened and there he was.

We agreed that whoever arrived first would wait in the car. I got there first. Fifteen minutes later, two taps on the window awakened every nerve I thought I had under control.

There were no panties, no shoes, and no movie left unfinished. Only the dress she had almost rejected and the look with which he awaited her in the shadows.

For six months I cared for every garment she hung out with me, saying nothing. Until I understood those lace pieces were a message she’d been too afraid to say aloud.
